I use the mobile app most for tracking cash transactions in Mint. It will even tell you the amount you could save or earn. If you could easily be earning more with a different bank, Mint will tell you. The same goes for, say, a savings account. If Mint sees you are paying way too much in interest on your credit cards, it will advise you, and also show you ads for accounts with better rates. These ads are targeted based on Mint's understanding of your financial situation. There are advertisements through the app (and the website), but they are elegantly incorporated and often quite useful. It updates at least once a day, and more if you force it to sync with the core data. I love this page because I can see in real time when a transaction posts to my account. The Updates tab is where you find individual transactions. There are a few more items on the main page, but the point is, you get a tight summary of all the key points in your financial life.
A credit score, updated quarterly, appears below that. Next you see how you are doing with your monthly budget in a simple line graph. Below that are accounts, or the aggregated balances across all your cash accounts, credit and debit accounts, and investments. At the top are alerts, which you can customize. Your Financial Picture When you open the Mint app, the landing page shows a complete overview of your financial situation. It can also connect to Venmo (Free at ), PayPal (Free at ), and even Bitcoin.
Mint supports a wide range of financial institutions, everything from your savings and checking accounts to mortgage holders. Mint is much more about spending and big-picture financial status. It's not meant for reconciling transactions. One key to understanding Mint is to know that it is not accounting software. That way, you will already have some perspective on your financial situation from your first day using Mint. It not only tracks your money from the day you sign up, but also at a few months' worth of historical data. Once Mint has access to your accounts, it analyzes your spending habits, income, and other financial transactions. You should, of course, combine that with a six-digit passcode on your iPhone. It makes it very hard for you to accidentally leave the app open for someone else to use. It's only a four-digit PIN, but it locks you out of Mint the moment you navigate away from the app, which is good. You can add a passcode to the app, and I strongly recommend you do. That means that even if hacker did get into your Mint account, they wouldn't be able to access the money in your accounts. You don't Mint any ability to move money. That's safer than it sound, because you are only giving Mint read access to information in the accounts. To get started, you give Mint access to your financial accounts by logging into your online banks and credit card accounts through Mint. There's no charge, as mentioned above there are ads, but you shouldn't let that discourage you from using the services, as I'll explain in a bit. A wonderful personal finance package that has a wealth of features, but notably excels in two areas, transaction tracking and stock reporting.
